Frequently Asked Questions

What is capoeira?

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that has many facets (Music, dance, arcobatics, etc.). The art form originated with enslaved Africans in Brazil, as they developed a way to train combat and a means to defend themselves, all disguised within a dance. It has deep African roots contained in much of the folklore, traditions, and music. Today, capoeira is global, and has practitioners and instructors from all cultures and walks of life.

How do I get started?

Come to a class! At all classes, beginners are welcome to join, and we’ll work with you to get you up to speed. We also offer a beginner class on the first Saturday of every month, so if you feel nervous about jumping in, come by then! Remember, we are all at different stages of our capoeira journeys; don’t be afraid to start yours! First class is free! (Class Information) (Code of Conduct)

What if my body can’t handle acrobatics?

There is no “correct” way to play a game of capoeira. As we age, our games grow as well, conforming to what feels right. Don’t feel like there is a shape you need to be in to start/continue training; your game will be your own :)

How much does it cost?

You can find our membership prices here.

For beginners: First class is free, and first 3 months membership is half-off. Come give it a try!

*If membership prices are an issue for you, feel free to contact us and we can see what we can do. Your presence and energy are the most important thing you offer.

What should I wear to class?

For footwear, you can practice barefoot or in athletic shoes with minimal soles (so you don’t roll your ankles). Regular students should plan on purchasing a capoeira uniform.

Do you teach kids?

Currently we do not offer kids classes, although this is a goal for our future steps. Check back regularly for updates.

Is capoeira good for self-defense?

Capoeira is great for developing strength, stamina, coordination and flexibility. We do not teach it as a self-defense system.

What style of capoeira do you teach?

At Capoeira Nagô, we teach “Capoeira Contemporânea.” This style involves elements of both Capoeira Angola (a more traditional style), and Capoeira Regional (a more martial style pioneered by Mestre Bimba), often incorporating them with elements of other dance forms such as hip-hop and breakdancing.

Does capoeira have a belt system?

Yes. Our capoeira uniforms are worn with colored cords. The progression in Capoeira Nagô is from white cord (or no cord) to black (for capoeira masters). It takes a long time to get to black, so it’s important to enjoy the journey!
